In addition to this, there are also some Thorium Veins inside the Cave, so if you want to double up even more, this is the place. Silithus is good, because the mobs have a high level, just like in Wintersprinng, so they have a higher chance for Rugged Leather.
There are 3 types of mobs here: Scorpions, Spiders and Duneworms. While the Spiders are not skinnable, they drop good silk, which can be sold on the Auction House. When it is, it will sell for as much as gold but usually floats between 50 and gold. Farming Rugged Leather is pretty easy, but not a lot of people do it.
It sells best in stacks of 20 on the auction house to players leveling their Leatherworking. You should be about level 55 before you go out to farm Rugged Leather. Update: You can make a lot of gold with Rugged Leather, but if you want to step it up and make thousands of gold you should read my personal favorite guide.
There is more Rugged Leather in the Blasted Lands than anywhere else. There are boars, basilisks, hyenas and felhounds in the northern half of the map. These range form level 53 to 57, are easy to find and respawn fast enough to make a living farming Rugged Leather off of.
But watch over your shoulder every now and then though, cause there's a level 60 elite spider patrolling the village. Comment by melkon I would suggest Yeti cave in Winterspring too. I needed 4 stacks of rugged leather for my alt, and i went there with my 70 hunter. I cleared the cave and the outside a couple of times, and I got 4 stacks in about 30 minutes.
Comment by Terramo If you are below lv. Of course, you should ask first, but most people don't mind if they are not planning on skinning. Comment by The reason why I don't prefer the Winterspring yeti is because they have the tendency to block freeze in melee. I've even been frozen shortly after I stunned them druid pounce , which could be a bug.
Either way, this breaks the rhythm. The Winterspring shardtooth bears especially elder are great alternatives and are easier to kill in melee because they don't freeze or give diseases or anything like that. Comment by bighairycamel I farmed these even up to the lvl 60s cause by then they were one or two shotted. Got several stacks in under 30 minutes.
Comment by South east of Everlook. Added bonus: picking up the skins from downed Yetis by the Bots! Comment by Duffles Another thing you could do is just farm Ruined Leather Scraps and make them - you'd only need to farm Ruined Leather Scraps for one of these. Comment by Where is the Yeti Cave located? You can loot 'em, eat 'em then skin 'em!
Plus one dropped Dark Pahntom Cape, which is always nice : Did this at 60 having done a few Outland quests to get some BC armour and weapons, which made the whole thing very easy. Needed the leather to level my LW from to and got the needed in under an hour. Comment by A very useful money maker these, used in a couple of tailoring recipes that form part of the powerleveling guide as well as the leatherworking guide.
And i'd reccommend the Yeti Cave. Went through it as a rogue leveling, nice couple of greens to sell, skinning and you could get up a nice tempo of killing and skinning your way through them. As noted above they respawn pretty fast as well. And the only quest i've found that requires these being killed has a very low drop rate, so you should only have to contend with other skinners for these mobs.
Comment by The yetis in winterpring are the best, hands down. Useful for powerlevelling skinning All your spots will be used for Rugged Leather, and thats why these yetis are my 1 spot. Comment by Yetis in Feralas will also drop it if you skin em. Also, the gorillas can. Comment by Heimdallen I tried something not mentioned here yet and found it to be rather efficient.
I went to the blue dragon cave in Winterspring, Mazthoril, as a 70 druid. The elite dragons in and around the cave are terribly easy to kill as a 70, yield decent silver about silver per mob on average , grey vendor weapons worth g, and are very plentiful. I just kept clearing the cave, and I found that the vast majority of the elite dragons skinned dropped 2 pieces of rugged leather each, with the occasional blue dragon scale or worn dragon scale.
Very few of them dropped only 1 piece, and even fewer of them dropped thick leather. The norm was 2 ruggeds per mob.
I'd HIGHLY recommend the dragon cave if you're a higher level, as it yielded great amounts of rugged leather, no one else was around, and it was very easy to plow through them. I tried the yeti cave, and personally, based on my experience, I believe the dragon cave nets much more rugged leather, much faster. Hope this helps! Oh, and if you're also a miner, there's always a rich thorium node or two in the cave. Comment by yea yeti's are great for rugged leather and as leon said its great wen some1 else is doin the quest Comment by Hello, just want to tell all the prot pallies out there that if your a protection paladin or another aoe class at 70, then you should not go to the yeti cave for farming rugged leather, there is a better place.
Just inside the instance there are TONS of dogs that you can kill and skin.. Which usually sell rather well Comment by chadtindale It has to be unanimously Terrordale in Eastern Plaguelands Plagued Swine drop it like mad and since they're neutral you can slag one without taking on two or three at a time. And if you're fortunate enough to be able to stealth through the other guys Comment by Arrace The "Annoying" Grey items you are talking about sell fairly well to vendors.
Like The Stoppable Force 2-h mace in outlands. Comment by I found that farming in the Mazthoril cave in winterspirng is one of the best areas to farm for Rugged leather. From the cave opening to the bottom of the cave and back I was able to gather the following in about 20 minutes. I did this on Level 70 Rogue with Green and Blue gear. Only one Dragon in the cave can see through invis and he is all the way at the bottom. Level 60 Elite dragon named Scryer. I killed all the elites and the packs of whelps.
This was a full clear. Comment by Where can I grind Rugged Leather as a lvl 45 hunter? Definitely give Dire Maul north a try as above mentioned. Comment by LongPinoy How much does a stack usually sell for?
It's a good grind, Lots and lots of rugged leather. In any way, it's gold and experience. I spent about Don't even bother farming anywhere else, especially if you can AOE. Comment by Well I have to agree with the Winterspring yetis being perfect. I don't know what went on with the earlier poster saying they didn't get any rugged. And since my LW was pretty low I could even use the thick leather to make some things and skill up. In addition to the leather I also got 2 14 or 16 slot green bags, I cant remember the name of them but it was great, used them to replace some of my old bank bags : Edit: Also, auctioneer addon says that Rugged Leather is sold by 1 vendor for 4g a stack Comment by I'll add my vote for DM North as well.
Comment by I found the elite blue dragonkin in Azshara very nice for farming this leather. They seem to have a fairly good drop rate for skinning rugged leather PLUS since the are elite, they drop a nice bit of silver and seem to drop quite a few greens.
There is also the chance to get the Azure Whelpling, which can go for quite a bit on the AH, or is pretty cute if you want to keep it. Edit: It took me about 3 hours to farm the 17 stacks of leather that I needed on a 71 Hunter in mostly greens. Comment by Zvarteismybabe If you're a leatherworker and you're more interested in leveling your profession than to simply sell the leathers I would suggest to farm these from the scorpids in Silithius. From them you can obtain at the same time the Heavy Scorpid Scales, that along with Rugged Leathers are used to make these bracers , the best way to level your Leatherworking from to and so.
Comment by naxxer Tested on 3. Good luck :. Theres a tunic too, and some gloves that you can buy off the vendor "Qia" in Everlook. Just take a couple trips around Frostsaber rock until you either A. Have enough rugged leather to get to with trainer stuff, or B. Have enough rugged and frostsaber leather to get to Because I've farmed this place a bit and neither one happens more. Comment by Im killing dogs in diremaul wich gives 60 leather per run.
Comment by I believe that the best place to farm for rugged leather Along with scales for dragonscale leatherworkers is at the cave in Mazthoril where almost all the elites level 54ish are easily soloable and they drop 2x rugged leather all the time.
That's the place I usually grind for rugged leather. Comment by As a level 80 rogue who didnt level up his Lw ive started to try and get 2 in it. So i needed some rugged leather.
At 20g a stack on my server i thought it was better to farm for it. So i went to the ice thistle cave in winterspring and farmed for 1 hour. In this hour i got rugged leather, 44 thick leather, Health pots and two greens. So overall i think this is great place to get rugged leather. Comment by north dm is the best place by far in 3 runs in the court yard when you first walk in i got 97 rugged leather 4 rugged hide 10 thick leather and 8 thick wolf hide so ya at lvl 80 that is THE best place to farm it edit for spelling.
Comment by I have to agree that if your high enough dire maul north is the place to go. Can only reset 5 times before Blizz stops you from entering but in those 5 runs I got Rugged Leather in about 20 minutes. Most of the mobs dropped 2 pieces each. Comment by tried terrordale and DM north. Terrordale - Swine are a good source but don't respawn fast enough. Had to search around the "village" for them too. DM North is the best. Simply run straight in, go down the ramp, kill the hounds which yields usually 1.
Hounds drop rugged leather, rarely thick leather, hides, and wolf leather or something of the sort. NOTE: you do need the crescent key to get in unless you can pick locks. Comment by mcbacon Augustus gives a quest small and fast quest and then he opens his shop.
Good to sell stuff. And yes, plagued swines in Terrordale are very good for rugged leather. If you are farming alone. Else not enough mobs. Comment by Couldn't disagree more. Plaguelands is 1, a pain of a flight to get to from almost anywhere, and 2, a bit of a ride to get up into that corner. I'm farmin Azshara, the blue dragon kin 'lites almost always drop rugged leather and sometimes 2.
When it's not that it's blue dragonscales, which gets snapped up on the AH on my server. Also got more than one loc with the dragonkin so easy to pass the respawn flippin between the two and still be gatherin. Comment by volcano Agreed. Farmed Rugged Leather in Terrordale in 1h 20min. No interruptions, fast respawn, a few other mobs easy to avoid plus, they're lvl 56, so they probably won't aggro.
Great for me, as Rugged Leather Stacks go for 40g on Lethon. Comment by Pachirisuneytor when i entered dire maul north, i only found that there were only two packs of dogs in the yard, 4 dogs each pack and there were no dogs in the second room, so i guess this may have changed cause i dont seem to find as many dogs as you people say.
As an 80 enhanced Shaman that isn't a major problem but for a player leveling through their 50's it could turn into an issue depending on what class they are. Comment by cyberdreck Has anyone gotten a lot from ST? If you can get a group for Zul Grub there's a huge amount there. Comment by Pinochet Dire Maul North may not be desirable if you don't have the key, and you don't intend to farm out more than a couple dozen stacks. Comment by Go to the Yeti Cave in Winterspring at Start at the entrance and grab the first 4, you should be able to tag them all without having to run too far.
From then on, you should be able to grab them in groups of in each section with 1 group of x2 yetis near the beginning. Very low impact and, best of all, the yeti's considering they are humanoid drop silver and higher-value vendor items. Hope this helps Comment by I wanted to get my sham sham's leatherworking at before he hit outland. I've been having problems getting this leather together.
Tried the yetti cave in Winterspring, but it was slow at level 58 as was the swines in Terrordale. After reading a few more posts I decided to try the Burning Steppes. The Terror Wing path is full of dragonkin which can be farmed. I'm farming them now as I type this and after about 10 minutes I have a stack of rugged.
If you are like me and wanting your proffessions finished before you get to Outland this would be a nice place for leather workers needing to farm that last bit of rugged leather.
Edit: I beleive some-one mentioned the respawn being rather slow. I just cleared a small area and started to write this. After i went back the small area i had cleared out had respawned.
And it couldn't of taken me 3 minutes or so to type this out. Comment by dire maul north is unbelievable Comment by Tested the Terrordale site with a level 65 feral druid. One timed hour of farming Plagued Swine got me: Rugged Leather x 96 average of 12min 30sec per stack Thick Leather x 13 Rugged Hide x 4 2g, 52s, 82c in sellable gray items see below Out of rest bouns.
As with most skinning mobs, the swine drop a bunch of gray items that don't stack well. When you run out of space, destroy the large ones and save the Ivory ones, as the Ivory vendor for 4. From the alliance flight point the ride to this site takes about seven minutes on a slow mount, five on a fast one. There's a patrol consisting of several elietes on the path in the vicinity of Plagewood. If you try to just ride by them, you'll likely get stunned then killed. The eliete mentioned above is the Nerubian Overseer.
He's soloable at 65, but it was pretty close, and not something I'd recommend. Fortunately, he stays in a cave to the north most of the time, and you practically have to stand inside him to pull aggro. The best spot for these is in a cave. The entrance is at , and the ramp to that entrance is at , under a minute to the south from both the Alliance Flight and the Horde Flight.
Once again, this was one hour to the minute of timed farming, and I got: Rugged Leather x or an average of 11 min 20 sec per stack Thick Leather x 64 Rugged Hide x 11 Thick Hide x 7 Pattern: Chimeric Leggings Peerless Shoulders of the Eagle Obsidian Band of the Gorilla 7g, 86s, 88c in direct money loot Out of rest bonus again exp varies, as there's a range of levels here The previous claims that these spawn faster than they can be killed is accurate, even when there's horde competition about.
My suggestion is to do all the ones in the cave, run out, jump off the ramp, then kill your way back up. By the time you reach the entrance again, stuff will have started to respawn. After 25 minutes i've gotten my hands on nearby Rugged Leathers. Just reset and go on. Comment by meigie After about an hour of farming in the yeti cave mostly inside the cave in Winterspring with my druid out of yetis i got: Rugged leather 46 Thick leather 4 Rugged hide.
Indeed a good farming place. Comment by petomatick Or you could just simply farm ruined leather scraps, then make light of them, and after make them medium, then heavy, then thick, and at last, u got ONE rugged leather. Tryed it out with my 66 undead rogue. Just for fun, cuz i was bored.
Took me three hours to get one. If u whant a stack in this way, hehe u would have to play like this for 60 hours Fun to try out thought. The courtyard at the beginning of the entrance has tons of mobs that drop up to 2 pieces of Rugged Leather at a time. I highly recommend this spot as I farmed about pieces of leather in about 20 minutes. The only problem is that you'll be locked out after the 5th instance reset but it'll make leveling your LW so much faster.
Comment by Do u have to skin all the rugged leather or does something actaully drop from mobs? Comment by Tankofheals After farming the Yeti Cave in Winterspring for an hour or two a day I made these assumptions as to how long it would take to reach the desired amount of leather I needed. In one clear of the entire cave and the 2 Yeti standing just outside of it I roughly calculated that I was skinning this much leather.
Well, hope this helps in any way and happy hunting giant ice bear GooD LucK! I cannot for the life of me farm this cave without competing for hides.
Comment by That yeti cave is at 65,42 btw, saw no one said the location. Comment by Cyriz Forget grinding around the world, head into Zul'Gurub that 60 instance in stranglethorn and skin the beasts there. They usually drop rugged leather, mostly 2, with some thick in there as well. Comment by Hydarnes Dire Maul was always skipped by my toons when levelling up, as by the mids I was seriously gunning for 58 and getting to Hellfire Peninsula.
Having only cleared it the once to get the achievement on my main, when my skinner decided to check the place out based on this thread, I thought I'd capture what's required to help others not so fluent with this instance. Once at Dire Maul, follow the huge ramp up towards the building complex 3 Avoiding ogres is trivial. Follow the wide corridor as it doglegs to the East, and then you arrive at a long corridor that runs East-West.
A narrower corridor is on the North wall - follow it, it curves to the East again, ending in the instance entrance for Dire Maul: East.
