One Direction experimented with a wide variety of sounds and styles in their five-year career -- their ballads are just as memorable as their anthems.
Niall wrote it alongside beloved British pop-rock group McFly , a sensitive number with a double meaning: extending a hand of kindness for a friend, partner or fan, and reminding everyone that One Direction will forever remember their humble origins. In the later 1D albums, our British boys started experimenting with more adult sounds, especially that in the classic-rock mold. Bonus track time! The entire band wrote it with Bunetta, Ryan and another regular collaborator, Sam Martin.
Being on the road all year long probably weighed heavy on the hearts of all the boys, not just our main man Niall. He told Entertainment Weekly about the process:. It was kind of a new sound that we had never tried before and I had never really written in that sound, either.
I was happy with the way we had written it, and the way we came about it. So when things like that happen, you feel proud. Apparently, this song was written while the boys were being driven around London in a black cab. The band went full-on rock with this one, and it alost works. The harmonies are great, and the whole song has a slick, Eighties feel. Sadly dumped on an EP, when it would have slotted in nicely on Made in the AM , or could even have replaced a song.
An perfectly satisfactory Eighties style power-rock number taking cues from the likes of Bruce Springsteen. A surprising touch of baroque pop with some Queen guitar references for good measure in the vein of Panic!
This bonus track from Take Me Home emulates Journey in its big, euphoric chorus — perfect for driving with the top down. This rousing track from Four was a great choice to close the standard edition of Four with. Another song where the band struggle to pull off some clumsy metaphors, albeit with some lovely vocals from Styles. Another, possibly controversial ranking. A spookily prescient song that in hindsight appears to have predicted Malik would be the first one to walk away.
This Randy Newman-inspired number is cheesy and trite as hell, but you'll probably find yourself singing along to the chorus. Not a Michael Jackson cover, but a driving Eighties-inspired song that makes you want to move. This song is literally just the titles of other songs. Zero marks for originality, full marks for cheek. Kudos for actually managing to make this list of physical flaws sound like it was written by an actual serial killer, though.
Folk influences redolent of The Lumineers give this track from Midnight Memories a spirited, uplifting feel. Robbie Williams, is that you? Another one that seems to find little favour in 1D song rankings, but is a complete bop. First of all, these lyrics are just totally unbelievable coming from Niall. You really expect me to believe he won't hold me any time I want it?
Other than that, it's a decent solo but is definitely outshone by Harry's bridge. This is one of my guilty pleasure 1D bops and Niall's part has always been my favorite for some reason. I just like when he sings fast like that. Best Lyric: "I want to write you a song, one to make your heart remember me. So any time I'm gone, you can listen to my voice and sing along.
Of course, no part in this song will ever hold a candle to Louis' bridge that makes me want to cry, but Niall's part is still good. I just love the way he says the first part of his solo. I've never really been a fan of this song, but I do like the lyrics in Niall's solo. Breaks my heart.
Another song that I've never really liked too much but that Niall's part kind of saves it for me. This is definitely one of my very favorite 1D songs.
The lyrics are kind of nonsensical and repetitive, but Niall definitely says "almighty" and "lightning" better than Harry and Louis do. Not his best solo, but still a good way to start off this absolute banger. And I definitely loved it more after he stared into my soul while singing it in "Carpool Karaoke.
It's not the best part of the song hello, Harry's solo , but for some reason I will always love that lyric and the way he sings it. Usually I would not like a pre-chorus this much, but the way he says "Yeah I fell for you! This is an underrated bop. And while there might not be anything special about this solo lyrically, I just really like the way he sings it and the music.
Personally, my favorite part of this song is the very beginning but Niall's solo bridge is definitely a very close second. Look, I really do not like this song at all. Overall it is very boring. I do, however, love this one lyric. Our first Niall solo. There may not be anything particularly special lyrically or vocally about this solo, but it was the first one we heard and it will always have a special place in my heart.
Okay so rhyming course with course isn't anything groundbreaking but I just LOVE the calming, sweet way he sings this solo. I am a Wolves stan and I will not stand for the fans who hate it. It's a bop and the lyrics are really cute, and Niall's part is absolutely no exception. Best Lyric: "I just wanna show you off to all of my friends, making them drool down their chinny-chin-chins. There he goes again doing the fast singing thing I love.
How could you not love this super cute, fun lyric? Paired with the way he does it in the video, it's just so adorable. If you think I only ranked this song in my top 20 Niall solos because of the way he says "chonce" then you are absolutely right. It's crazy that a pre-chorus ended up in the top 20 but I have been obsessed with this line since the first time I heard it. I just love it. I love this song because Niall actually gets to sing a lot in it.
And this line about the river and boat is my very favorite line of the song. I've seen a lot of people say they think this line is a weird simile, but personally it's my favorite line of a criminally under-appreciated song. Can I relate to this song? I could listen to these 2 lines on a loop for hours because the way his voice sounds when he sings just gets me.
Every single part of this song is great. Thank you, Ed Sheeran. I feel like this is an unpopular opinion but I stan this song.
